Naturally Brewed Beers of Character

About Us

The Carrig Craft Brewing Company was established in 2011 by husband and wife team Sinead O’Connell and Martie Deegan, who together have accumulated a lifetime of passionate involvement and experience within the Irish brewing and hospitality industries. For many years it has been Sinead and Martie’s shared dream to naturally brew genuine Irish Craft Beers – beers infused with great flavour, character and charm.

Our Brand Name – Carrig

But Sinead and Martie’s vision for a new craft beer encompassed more than great flavour, character and charm. Essentially they yearned for a brand identity that reflected the solidity of Ireland’s rich cultural and geographical heritage – a rock of sorts. And that is precisely what they choose – CARRIG – which translated from the Gaelic means rock. Carrig or Carrick (the anglicised version) is synonymous with the Irish landscape, in that almost every single parish has a placename beginning with Carrig or Carrick.

Our Inspiration

The inspiration for Carrig Craft Beer dates back to Celtic Medieval Ireland when the Irish monks, who inhabited the small monasteries along the River Shannon, brewed hand crafted Irish ales and beers. Those Celtic monks were dedicated to a life of purity and the pursuit of excellence and those were the very same qualities incorporated into their cottage brewing industry. Sinead and Martie have today harnessed that same spirit in their pursuit of excellence and in the purity of product that permeates the naturally brewed flavours of Carrig Craft Beer and Rowers Red Ale.

How Our Logo was Born

The logo for the Carrig Craft Brewing Company combines both the romanticism and rich heritage of ancient Ireland. The emblem chosen for Carrig is inspired by the stone archway and Celtic Cross of Costello’s Chapel, in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Underlying this simple emblem is one of Ireland’s most poignant, romantic narratives dating back to 1879 when a heartbroken Edward Costello had this tiny chapel erected to commemorate the untimely passing of his wife, Mary Josephine. Costello’s Chapel, which is the smallest church in all of Europe, measures no more than 16feet by 12. The love of one man for his wife is reflected in the story of Carrig Craft Brewing Company in the shared dream of a husband and wife to brew together some of Ireland’s truly natural and authentic beers, ales and stouts.

Our Brewery Site

Like the Irish monks some 800 years past, Sinead and Martie favour the fresh, pure, natural mineral and herb infused waters of the River Shannon when it comes to choosing a site for their dream handcrafted brewing industry. The microbrewery is located close to the banks of the Shannon in Banagher, Co. Offaly. Today Carrig Craft Beer and Rowers Red Ale contain those distinctive natural mineral flavours that are unique to the waters of the Shannon and the Irish brewing industry.

Our Brewing Secrets

There are no secrets really – except uncommon dedication and a passionate commitment to the pursuit of excellence. And of course, water, barley, hops and yeast all naturally brewed. And the pure mineral infused waters of the River Shannon. And should we forget, over 800 years of inspirational heritage…..That’s CARRIG…..
